2 wrestlers place at State

Tallassee finished 13th in the Class 1A-5A state wrestling championships in Hunstville; however, the Tigers streak of individual champions ended at nine years.

Andy Baker (57-2) and Zak Haynes (48-7) made it to the podium with second place and third place finishes respectively. Both will be back next year. Baker is a junior and Haynes, a sophomore.

"They work really hard," THS head coach John Mask said. "They're phenomenal young men. Both want to add their names to the wall in the gym."

State runner-up Andy Baker

It was Baker's second runner-up finish at state. He was third last year. Haynes was third last year as well.

Baker's 57 victories broke the team record for wins a single season by a wrestler.

"I think Josh Epperson, Kennon Reese and Chris Adams were tied with 52 or 53 in a year," Mask recalled. "(Andy's) had an amazing year."

Andy's older brothers Drew (2014) and Jake (2016, '17) each won titles at Tallassee.

"I don't know which one's better," Mask added of the Baker boys. "They're all different in their abilities and talents, but they're all a blessing to coach. It's a great family with good kids. It's been a joy. I really wish I had five or six more of them."

Favorite Arab edged Scottsboro for the state title. Alexandria was third.
