The SMS Concert Band and the SMS Symphonic Band started preparing for their performance at MPA (Music Performance Assessment) in January when they returned from Christmas Break. Music Performance Assessment is where bands from schools all over the state prepare music to perform in front of judges for a score. There is also a sight-reading element to prove that our national music standards are being met in the classroom.

In sight-reading, students had never seen the piece of music placed before them and were given seven minutes to work with band director, Melanie Perry, and play the piece all the way through. During those seven minutes students were not allowed to play a single note on their instrument. They could only count their part and “air-play.” If any noise comes out of their instruments before the seven minute mark, you can be disqualified.

Students could have received scores from 1-4.
1 = Superior
2 = Excellent
3 = Good
4 = Fair

Both of our SMS groups received a Superior on stage and a Superior in sight-reading. According to Mr. Bird, this makes SMS history. We are extremely proud of both the concert and symphonic bands of SMS! Below you can see each group celebrating their accomplishments!
